CITY OF RIVERSIDE: MAYORS RACE: PATRICIA DAWSON: RIVERSIDE 5TH WORSE CITY TO RAISE CHILDREN?

Riverside’s own taxpayer advocate Vivian Moreno gives her take on the current state of affairs regarding the City of Riverside’s Mayor’s race. Her second topic is that according to a new study released last month by diversitydatakids.org, the City of Riverside ranks as the 5th worse city to raise children!  Now why is that?

Suspiciously enough, we keep on seeing reports that appear to be covering up for the City of Riverside, instead lumping the City within the term “Inland Empire.”  We are calling that Fake News, as a CBS report actually states that the City of Riverside is within the top 10 worse cities to raise your children.  This Brandeis University source on the other hand, shows what we are talking about.

According to the PE and various news reports, actually state Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, as oppose to city.  We haven’t been able to find anything which resembles that on the diversitydatakids.org site.  What we did find is a table which contains Metros/ Cities of Riverside, San Bernardino and Ontario lumped together.  Regardless, this is not a county issue, and nowhere in any of the sources do they call it a county issue: it is a metro/ city issue period!

Don’t forget to Vote No on Measure A, the new college bond associated with building and modernizing community college facilities.  And let’s not forget the last bond measure known as Measure O.  It was supposed to be about fixing problems at existing schools, and now we see the monies are being diverted to building new schools.  And the local citizen oversight board, which is responsible for informing the public about the bond proceeds, has been stacked by the school board’s cronies rending it ineffective.  So who contributed to that last Measure O bond back in 2016?  As you can see below, almost nothing but architects, vendors, lawyers and builders (courtesy of ‘No on A’ Facebook site): entities that either do business with the District or want to, no doubt.  Follow the money and see who benefits!  More to come on this scam!

    Javier, Vivian;

    Just a couple of observations

    I concur with your skepticism on this recent report labeling Riverside as a worst place to raise children in that the study bases much on the cost if affordable housing. Which while your headline calls out my fellow RUSD Board of Education peer, Patricia Lock Dawson, this aspecr, housing shortage,zoning and more is a City led solutions matter,one that a Councilmember, like PLD’s mayoral race opponent, Mr Andy Melendrez is to have purview over.

    Second and to “Measure A” . The TMC article labels “A” as a “school bond ” when it is a Community College GO Bond which has in financial terms and governance no connection to RUSD and our Measure B GO Bond passed Nov 2016. We had in fact been under a long term impression that RCCD’s Bond would collaborate with RUSD to build on Central Middle School property ( joint use agreements etc) a Middle College such as that which RCCD with their Norco campus has with CNUSD. Unfortunately and to this RUSD Trustee’s dismay that proposal did not make the final list. I personally will support Measure A as when we look at the 1880’s founding of Public Education in Riverisde the system was factually a K-14 design. That altered over the years yet my own post HS grad experience with RCC , preparing a not prepared in HS young dude to become, after he spectacularly botched his freshman year at RCC, a young responsible adult, attentive student, active in sports, journalism, Mecha , debate and Student Senate, which all led to acceptance of this kid into UCLA, graduating from a 4 year college as the first male in the Hunt family tree going back then some 70 yrs. We are truly a PK-14 Educational system here in Riverside today.

    While I am keenly aware of our mutual friend, Jason Hunter’s strong advocacy, as a Member of the Measure O Oversite Comm, as my appointee, that the oversight comm is ” a farce ” as he labeled it in our more recent conversation, I do not concur with Jason’s no doubt well researched opine that the whole thing stem ( no pun intended, yet no bad) to stern is “corrupt. I cincue there is warrant in the Operations Comm ( Mrs Allavie and myself, as Chair) should separate out to see if such changes would enhance what was this Board’s objective that this Comm, unlike the one for Measure B when I arrive in 2008 which was a farce . This Board, Brent Lee and I as the Ops Committee for 24 months, sought was an Oversight group which had access to Planning etc at the start and not just a B had alleged at the final close out. My public comment on this when we reported to the Board and asked for their support, 100 %, that, as I stated, ” we 5 are not some 5 oricles on high where only our visions are allowed”. We want our citizens via the O committee and other venues ie campus community meetings included and input shared and even incorporated.

    As RUSD and Public Education governance is “shared governance ” I always want to, have a responsibility to, add that theae arw the words and expressions of a single RUSD Trustee, I am not speaking for the Board and related then the District. Please if later you determine something I have said written is copy worthy as an add to a future TMC article that you would include that “clarification’.

    If I may be of service as to informationz and we trust clarity, on RUSD related issuesn then please reach out and connect.

    I trust the clarifications as to whose role is whoms helped. The District’s legal authority via Calif Ed Code ends at rhw curbline of a campus. Housing or lack thereof especially affordable is a major negatives on the pull downward as to declining enrollment. Outside of Banning and Beaumont USD’s all Public Education districts in our region are facing declining enrollment. Affordable housing is one answer, and as I referenced requires leadership at City Hall where CM Melendrez is the senior member on the dais. The other and Calif wide is the declining birthrates , which we can’t I suppose place at the doorsteps of either Trustee PLD nor Councilmember AM.

    Bad place to raise children? We have achieved a 97% graduation rate at RUSD, the highest among the 16 largest Public Schools Districts in Calif, the highest in the IE. Unlike the City, where CM Melendez has served 14 plus years, RUSD has paid down its PERS indebtiness and has established an investment plans per say to “maintain the beast in the box ” , and undertaken these past 4 yrs when Patricia Lock Dawson has served as a fellow Trustee. She is one of the very brightest people I have ever worked with, she has compassion and a clear sense to look at all alteenatives. PLD has been the lead on the Board as to the imperative need to address Social Emotional issues among students on our campuses, we are building 3 such centers as a start at Ramona, King and North. The State has made these centers a priority under Prop 13 and we are looking to be shovel-ready on these 3 with immediate attnetion to the other HS campuses should Prop 13 pass on 3/3. PLD has been a leader on the Arts as well ensuring that when the Arts Academy at the Cesare Chavez Center was bereft of funds the District stepped in to supply funds as our studnets were 85%of those being served. A bit bothersome to.me and I suppose my peers, when in this Mayoral campaign another candidate has claimed their efforts established and maintained this worthy program. Yet not enough of a distraction to counter all the good community and child benefit this PPP–City Parks, RUSD, Private Community leadership, project had done for the Eastside community and beyond.

  2. Thank you very much Tom, great hearing from you. Your funny! Listen, this is my sand box ….“A well balanced headline and story with all facets examined is a story that fully seeks to inform rather than to simply inflame.” Professor Janice Abrams, RCC Journalism Director and Faculty advisor to the Tiger Rag 1973-76 . Great teaching stays with one. This statement is Bullshit. Who wants to follow your plan its to vanilla for me. You should be teaching your students its more fun to be creative than to fit into your politically correct box. I didn’t even want to go back to Thirtymiles but your Candidate Gabriella Plascencia inspired me. You put your money behind trash like Plascencia and now you want us to take Patricia seriously. WRONG! I know what this is all about. I will be working on a formal response and a vlog post. Thank you for your letter Vivian.
