The VIC awards are given to those “Very Important Citizens” that demonstrate outstanding involvement in the political process for all who live in the City of Riverside. These are citizens that are willing to take on the political process for the betterment of us all and dedicated to making the City of Riverside a quality city for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
These are the people fighting the causes that are changing the process, future, and structure at City Hall.
Through the selfless effort of many, these people have made significant change in the fabric we all call home.
These are the people who make the effort to attend city council meetings on Tuesday and are not afraid to speak up. They do it without a retirement package, paycheck, or a car allowance.
Here are the City of Riverside’s 2014 most influential citizens of the year, selected by:
THE COMMITTEE FOR BETTER GOVERNMENT, RIVERSIDE
1. VIVIAN MORENO: Is awarded the number one outstanding citizen of the year award for 2014. She is awarded for her outspoken style her selfless involvement with community issues such as AG Park, the Sewer Treatment Plant and the Sewer Audit. She has a keen sense of community organizing bringing the citizens of Ag Park together and teaching them how to fight their cause. She feels her most important work has been in finance and fighting for the transparency of all financial documents. Today because of her efforts we now have a portal on the Citys web site that makes it easier to view the financials. And also for the countless hours she spends on research and writing for her blog, Thirty Miles of Corruption.com The Committee for better government wants to thank Vivian Moreno for all her work.
2. JAVIER MORENO: For his ongoing effort to keep the public informed and aware of all information relating to the Citizens and Rate payers of the City of Riverside. He spends many late nights awake making sure the articles and documents that are written for Thirty Miles of corruption are Fit, Fresh, and full of Fun!
3. RAYCHELE STERLING: Former Deputy City Attorney for the City of Riverside is recognized for not being afraid to take on the legal issues of the public and city employees. Her efforts have been measured by her ability to communicate and for so many times Pinch hitting for the speakers at City Council meetings.. She has used many volunteer hours supporting the efforts of the public.
4. JASON HUNTER: Former employee of public utilities. Has spent the year taking on Ethics, Employee and Financial Issues. Because of his efforts, we now have a new Ethics Ad Hoc Committee.
5. LETITIA PEPPER: Attorney and Advocate for community issues, Letitia was arrested for clapping earlier this year at a City Council Meeting. She has now taken on issues of Free Speech at public meetings. Thank-you Letitia for taking one for public speech and our constitutional rights.
6. DVONNE PITRUZZELLO: A school teacher with a Masters Degree in teaching, has spent countless hours studying City of Riverside Bonds, especially the sewer bonds and the illegal inter-agency loans, Through her efforts she had created doubt in the use of the Sewer Bonds, so much so that we now have a sewer audit.
7. AURORA CHAVEZ: Retired Senior account clerk (Accounts payable) Alvord Unified School District, and advocate for seniors, disabled, and Transportation Issues. She was instrumental in bringing forth the issues of concern over the incompetence of Council Member Jim Perry and is part of the recall process against him. She keeps the issues alive at City Council like the Main Downtown library, Greyhound bus, Sewer fund , Removing the Red Light Cameras, and Stopping the rate increases on our utilitiy bills. City Council Has now approved the process to move forward with the down town library.
8. KAREN WRIGHT: Retired, in charge of the Friday Morning Group at the Goeske Center, and an advocate for all of us, she probably been doing this longer than most of the speakers. She was arrested in 2013 for speaking over 6 seconds, former City Attorney Gregory Priamos, had her arrested at the City Council Meeting. Greg Priamos has now left the City of Riverside . Karen is there every Tuesday, rain or shine, and she has been for many years. Just because of her experience level and talking on almost every issue we have to applaud Karen Wright.
9. MARILYN WHITNEY and the Ag park families: Marilyn is retired and a new advocate for the AG Park Neighborhood. She has been instrumental in bringing the AG Park issue to City Council. Also, getting the media source KTLA involved and interested in the issues of AG Park. Marilyn is new to council meetings but ahs brought a lot to the table in a such a short amount of time. “Look Out for Marilyn!” The AG Park issue will not go away and be a definite contender with regards to how the City of Riverside has done business with developer buddies such as Chuck Cox. Currently, Marilyn has received a letter from Developer Chuck Cox’s lawyers to “Cease and Desist,” as to stop her first amendment right of free speech with reference to public comment at City Council. We believe this is back firing or blow backing on Mr. Cox. Someone has done someone wrong…

10. KEVIN DAWSON: Advocate for the Public and of Friends of Riverside Hills. Kevin has been a long time advocate for legal issues. Such as how we hire Out-Side-Legal-Council. I have personally known Kevin for 6 years and he has been working on it at least six years on longer. Former City Attorney Greg Priamos would feverishly deflect and avoid the true contractual issues. Bottom line there was never ever any contracts with big firms such as Best, Best & Krieger. The issue finally came to City Council on December 17th, 2014. An article on the subject which featured Kevin Dawson and Jason Hunter(Another Community Advocate). Congratulations Kevin for making a difference!

11. PHYLLIS PURCELL: Retired School Teacher and Advocate for the Homeless and Seniors. She has been a main stay at City Council Meetings almost every Tuesday talking on Senior and Homeless issues. In 2014, Mayor Bailey refused public comment to Phyllis Percelle and made her cry. This exercise by Mayor Bailey actions in what he may assumed was public disobedience, has been instrumental in changing the way public speakers are accepted at City Hall.
12. JOEL UDAYKE: Owner of The Flowerloft, He has supported many of the issues and he has been outspoken on the miss use of public funds and one of the most memorable moments of the year was when he brought in a orange jump suit and hand cuffs in a Victoria Secrets bag….. and used it as props for his public comments. You had to have been there.
13. LARRY ALLEN: The new other Guy, We need to thank Mr Allen for his Monday morning quarter backing. He is on the phone almost every morning lobbying the public officials and the citizens on current up-and-coming issues that may have an impact on us all.
14. DON HERMAN COLLINS GALLEGOS: Community Activist and Artist, has brought issues of concern which have impacted the community as well as social justice issues.
15. ERROL KOSCHEWITZ: Reviews issues of the County of Riverside and how they impact the City of Riverside. He always keeps it FUNNY, and he is still waiting for Mayor Rusty Bailey to approve an over head projector.
