Of all the candidates for mayor, only Dvonne Pitruzzello has demonstrated the heart of a reformer and the courage to take on the political establishment, therefore she gets my vote. It also helps that she hasn’t sent me one of those stupid mailers. – Bill Scherer, Riverside Conservative Examiner

They all suck.
Peter Benavidez, a member of the Charter Review Committee has taken out his papers for the mayor’s race.
Hey, what ever happened to the story you promised about Schiavone’s Viagara stop at the Border? And what about kristin Tilquist’s pension spike? C’mon, please don’t leave us hanging! Enquiring minds are dieing to know.
it’s M-E-L-E-N-D-R-E-Z, not “Melendez” as you have it. Please fix.
Thanks Kaptalizm!
Update 2/16: They still all suck.
There’s still a couple out filling out paperwork. Bring on the debates! That’s when you’ll be able to separate the wheat from the chaff. I was at a CC meeting where the mayor plus three candidates sat in attendance and the mayor had to ask, “what’s a crime of moral turpitude anyway”? And none of them seemed to know. I thought the orientation they receive including ethics and legal advisement that they receive would include a teaching on this subject.
Finally Chris MacArthur (who so far is not running for mayor) had to look it up on his Ipad and provided a workable definition on which to build upon on this subject.
I have questions. Now with committing to the new Convention Center, complete with dome, does anyone wonder why there are more than 12 empty store fronts in the 3 block stretch referred as the River walk? You know, the downtown mall that Gardner vowed to oppose renovating? But we have statues. Why is the Statler building still empty after evicting businesses 4 years ago? What’s going on with the Chinese landfill? Where’s a damn full service grocery store downtown? No disrespect to Maxi Foods, good for staples but don’t eat the meat.
City of the Arts? Museums are fabulous however, how many times a year do you actually visit one? I visit downtown Redlands and see pubs, restaurants, shops and people actually out past 5:00. I walk the River walk in the evenings and the place is locked down like a western ghost town. Catch 22….the few surviving businesses close early because there’s no foot traffic. There’s no traffic because there’s very little to do. Why is the city mind messing with The Getaway Cafe? Why did the city encourage and fund the Hyatt knowing they were closing the Convention center? Do we smell another Sol’e project not to mention the demise of 3rd street condos? And what will the city do with the Hyatt when it will most likely default on their loan? I say it should have been a parking structure w/shops.
For the third time, let’s pay for designs to renovate the raggedy library….and do nothing. Where the domes worth that? Another step-child in the closet.
River Walk has such wonderful potential and the space to accommodate it. I close my eyes and see quaint Bistros spilling out onto sidewalk dining, flavors of music, wine tasting, people shopping in stores like a Pier I, Crate and Barrel, The Gap, Toys R Us, Kohl’s or a QFC (combo grocery/department store) and parking.
Mr. Gardner, why are you not concerned with this and you want to become the mayor? The only reason I’d vote for you is it would get you out of my district. But that would be just the tip of the ice berg with what I refer to as the city council with ADHD.
What an awesome post by Calico lane! I don’t want to re-litigate the past, but Gardner said back in 2007 that he didn’t want a bustling downtown. Mission accomplished, Mike.
Calico, great comments. First, this is what happens when we elect morons. Second, the city has entered the private business arena. They run good businesses out in hopes of getting their favored business because they are friends with the owner. No one wants to come to the River Walk area at night because they have seedy people with no police presence, I’m not talking about the college students, they are they only ones keeping the business that remain afloat.
As far as the Hyatt, too suspicious for me. The city takes out 20.6 million in Federal bonds gives them to the Redevelopment agency and they give them to the developer. The way the lease is set up if the developer faults, he walks, no loss to the developer, but the city stands to lose two libraries and two fire stations if it does not pay these bonds. Did I say morons?
The library will not get completed unless it is put on the ballot for a vote by the citizens. So how can we NOT have a renovated library but we let our former city manager spend over 200 million in five years at his discretion and the city council had no fiscal oversight? How could we have spent 2 billion and not have a downtown library, morons doesn’t fit here, please fill in yourself.
Where there is no vision, the people perish
Proverbs 29:18
Thank you Dvonne and Kap for your kind support!
Calico
I see we have number 7 in the race, hope this doesn’t dilute the scales.
Now 8 possible candidates. It’s definitely going to be a runoff. Who do you want to see as the final 2, and who do you think it will be?
None of the current nor former councilmen!!!!!!!!
“Pier I, Crate and Barrel, The Gap, Toys R Us, Kohl’s or a QFC”??? Big box stores are the last thing I want in the River Walk. Why take something special and unique and make it indistinguishable from any of the other areas around here that have these stores? Isn’t it better to have elected officials who take their time in planning, and try to actually invest in the city in a way that allows it to be a special, unique place? Gee, what a concept.
I’d rather have a mayor who actually has experience working with the city. It’s easy to just be negative and cynical, but what’s your suggestion? Who do you actually support?
Viv, Are you so clueless that you don’t understand that there must be a runoff in the Mayors race? Your declaration of Bailey as the winner shows that Mrs. Self Appointed Auditor has no idea how things actually work!! DUH!!!
Sorry Mr. Observer, ‘just an oversight’, as the city would say, sorry to dissapoint you but this was not Viv, but another contributor. At 1:30 am I just meant to say Bailey won top postion of this current mayor’s election. Yes, we know their will be a runoff between Bailey and Adkison and inserted that additional bit of info. But it appears you have issues with Riverside’s own Self Appointed Citizen Auditor, Vivian Moreno, of which you are welcomed to continue to address. Further, I agree the “Duh” is valid, but have you heard some of the statements made by Mayoral Candidated William “Rusty” Bailey or Former Councilman Ed Adkison? That should concern you more, than an ‘oversight’ of symantics. You must be somehow connected with the intersactum of city politics or really believe that if one business hires one person, that we can cut the unemployment in half…
